These terms are a legal agreement between you and the developer of Roadless ("we", "us") governing your use of the Roadless application and roadless.ca. By downloading, installing or using Roadless you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use the app.
Safety — read this part
Roadless is an aid, not a lifeline. Do not rely on it to keep you alive.
- The AI runs on your phone and can be wrong. It may state something confidently that is inaccurate. Verify anything that matters.
- Map data comes from public sources, may be outdated or incomplete, and water shown on a map may be seasonal, contaminated or gone.
- GPS can be inaccurate under canopy, in valleys, or in poor conditions.
- Roadless is not a substitute for a paper map and compass, a satellite communicator or personal locator beacon, telling someone your plans, or professional medical, legal or survival advice.
- Phones fail. Batteries die, screens break, and cold destroys both. Carry backups.
- In an emergency, contact emergency services. Roadless cannot call for help and is not an emergency service.
You are solely responsible for your decisions in the backcountry. Nothing the app produces is a professional recommendation, and you assume all risk arising from your use of it.
1. Licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Roadless on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service, for personal, non-commercial use. This licence does not allow you to use Roadless on a device you do not own or control, and you may not distribute or make it available over a network where it could be used by multiple devices at once. You may not copy, resell, rent, sublicense, reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble the app or the AI model it downloads, except to the extent that restriction is prohibited by applicable law.
2. The AI, and what it is not
Roadless runs Qwen3.5-4B, an open-source language model created and trained by the Qwen team at Alibaba and released under the Apache 2.0 licence. We did not train this model. We apply a small amount of additional tuning so it understands the app around it, but its knowledge, behaviour and limitations come overwhelmingly from a model we did not build and do not control. You can inspect the model, its licence and its documentation at the link above.
Its output is provided for general informational purposes only and cannot be guaranteed accurate. Language models produce text that is plausible, which is not the same as text that is true — it can be wrong, incomplete, out of date, or entirely fabricated while sounding confident. Nothing it produces is professional medical, legal, navigational, or survival advice, and it must not be treated as a substitute for training, experience, or qualified help.
Do not make safety-critical decisions on the strength of what the AI tells you. Verify anything that matters against the terrain in front of you and against equipment that does not depend on a battery. See the safety notice above.
3. Your content
Anything you create in the app — conversations, pins, gear lists — stays on your device and remains yours. We do not receive it, claim no rights over it, and cannot recover it if your device is lost or the app is deleted. See the Privacy Policy.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to use Roadless to break the law, to trespass, to interfere with the app's operation or our infrastructure, or to attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems.
5. Downloads, storage and data charges
Roadless downloads large files — map areas, and an AI model of several gigabytes. You are responsible for any mobile data charges and for having sufficient free storage. Downloads are provided as-is and may occasionally fail or need to be repeated.
6. Third-party data
Roadless uses map data from OpenStreetMap contributors (© OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence) and biodiversity records from GBIF, under their respective licences. That data is provided by those projects without warranty; we do not control its accuracy, completeness or availability.
7. No warranty
Roadless is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any information it provides is correct or complete. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
8. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, personal injury or property damage arising out of or relating to your use of Roadless — including decisions made in reliance on information the app provided. Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim, or CAD $50.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
9. Beta software
Roadless is in testing. Pre-release builds may be unstable, may lose data, and features may change or be removed without notice.
10. Changes and termination
We may update these terms; the date above will change, and continued use means you accept the revision. We may stop distributing or supporting the app at any time. You may stop using it at any time by deleting it. Sections 2, 7, 8 and 11 survive termination.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Nothing in this section deprives you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence.
12. Apple App Store
The following applies where you obtained Roadless from the Apple App Store. Apple requires these terms, and where they conflict with anything above, these prevail.
- This agreement is with us, not Apple. Apple is not a party to it and is not responsible for Roadless or its content.
- Maintenance and support. We are solely responsible for providing any maintenance and support for Roadless. Apple has no obligation to furnish any maintenance or support services.
- Warranty. In the event of any failure of the app to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to the app, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to any warranty are our sole responsibility.
- Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app or your possession and use of it, including product liability claims, any claim that the app fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection or similar legislation.
- Intellectual property. In the event of a third-party claim that the app infringes intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement and discharge of that claim.
- Legal compliance. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Third-party terms. You must comply with any applicable third-party terms when using Roadless.
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and, upon your acceptance, have the right to enforce them against you.
- Contact. Questions, complaints or claims about the app should be directed to support@roadless.ca.
